Muscles…

Can I just go ahead and admit that muscles aren’t my thing? Maybe because I’ve never had any to speak of….

I was never the cheerleader or the dancer. Athletics were not my thing. EVER. Once, my junior high basketball coach tried to recruit me because of my height…then he saw me play basketball during P.E.

I never had to worry about those recruiting conversations again.

Fast forward to my life now with four, going on five, little ballerinas in my house. Bobby pins litter every flat surface, we are constantly battling runs in tights and costume glitter, and the number of miles on my big gray van is astronomical.

As I’ve watched my girls dance, especially my oldest, I’m amazed at the muscles they develop as they dance. Muscles I didn’t even know I had.

Dancers, especially ballerinas, are striving for those long, lean “lines”.  There is ongoing conversation about turnout, hip rotation and gluteal muscles.  A dancer’s calves and feet muscles are unparalleled. The daily barre work and repetitive rehearsals continue to strengthen these muscles and many more over their years as a dancer.

You can spot a ballerina from just one glance. They have a certain “look”. Their hours of work and dedication to their craft have created the body that they needed to perform at their best.

The same is true for many cheerleaders. Could you scan the crowd at school and pick out the cheerleaders right away? They work hard on the development of the muscles they need as well. Their back, shoulders, upper and lower legs all work together to bring excitement to the crowd and display their school spirit.

Surprisingly, ballerinas and cheerleaders work to strengthen many of the same muscle groups with often very different results. God designed their bodies to stretch and grow the muscles they would need for what lay before them.

He does that even with those of us who are NOT athletes. He puts experiences and circumstances in our lives to stretch us and form us.

Many times, we want to wish away these situations…we pray and ask God to take things away from us…begging for relief and reprieve.

But He has a plan.

He’s leading us through our circumstances to give us the muscles we need.

One day we will need those muscles to comfort a friend who is in a similar situation.

One day we will need those muscles to do the hard things He calls us to do that we don’t think we have the strength to handle.

He has been preparing us all along.

You and I will develop different muscles.

You and I won’t look the same to the world.

But we will be equally equipped to live out God’s calling on our life and flex the muscles we need to serve Him.

 

 

 

 

 

Mommas, You Can Do This

I remember when I started making a shift in my thinking about wellness, I was secretly hoping someone would come down with something so I could try out all my new found natural methods. 😉 What kind of craziness is that?!? I was young and naive and only had four kids at home at that point so I clearly didn’t know what I was thinking. Ha!

When Ellie was a baby, at the first sign of ANYTHING, I was googling “diseases” and calling the doctor to see if they could get me in THAT DAY. It never occurred to me that by dragging my immuno-compromised baby to the doctor that I was exposing her to even more sickness.

As our family grew, I did this a little less frequently because I didn’t want to drag ALL the littles to the doctor’s office. I usually just called and asked advice and I always asked about the “tipping point”. What do I need to watch for so that I will know when we have a real issue and I NEED to bring them in? In almost every situation it never got to that tipping point. We were able to heal at home with no intervention.

The longer I was a momma, the more confident I felt. I knew that it wasn’t ok to give an antibiotic for every cough or sniffle. I learned that fever is the body’s way of dealing with “something” so most times I just need to let it run its course. I learned that how my mom mothered me through sickness….lots of rest, fluids, home cooked meals…was many times the best way.

Are there times we need modern medicine to intervene? Absolutely! So thankful that it is there and available to us. I’m thankful that God has gifted doctors and nurses to care for others in the way that they do. God has given men the knowledge to create powerful medicines that can do amazing things when we need them.

But God has also gifted US. You and me. He’s given us the ability to know when something is not quite right with our little ones. He gives us the “push” to slow down…to snuggle, to rest, to turn our lives “inward” when sickness comes…sometimes that’s all we need. Sometimes we need to pull from our toolbox of ideas to help our littles get through a hard season.

Our moms had a toolbox of items on hand at all times to nurse us through at home. I have a toolbox too. It’s just that my options are natural, safe for my babies and don’t contain the toxins we want to avoid.

Mommas, you can do this. You can equip yourselves to care for your littles as the first line of defense. Don’t be afraid. You can start now to make healthy choices all around that will set your babies up for wellness.

When something comes up, you can deal with it. Be confident in the gifts God gave you as a momma. Snuggle those babies, love on them….defer to professionals when it’s needed but learn to trust in yourself too. God has given you the skills. Listen. Take charge.

A new year…

Gosh, I can’t believe it is already 2019. I was just telling my kids the other day that when I was younger, I knew for SURE that in the year 2020, we would be living on the moon, wearing space suits and driving hovercrafts. HA! We have a year then to get busy!

With January, comes change. So many of us make resolutions or plans this week with hopes for an amazing year. I’m no different. I’m planning to kick some bad eating habits to the curb by planning ahead. I also want to start doing yoga with Ellie. My friend Annie got me set up with a program that I can do from my own living room. BONUS! I know Ellie will help keep me accountable.

Dealing with Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar Fasciitis just plain stinks. I struggled with it last year but must have had a very mild issue because it seemed to resolve itself with the consistency of the colder months and wearing shoes more frequently.

 

But this summer was a completely different story. I knew that I was doing all the WRONG things…wearing flip flops constantly or going without shoes entirely. I assumed that as summer turned into fall and I began to wear shoes more, that it would just “cure” itself. Boy, was I wrong. It just continued to get worse.

After asking for advice from friends, I felt really overwhelmed with their answers. Everyone had a pretty strong opinion about what worked and what didn’t and they all had opposing ideas. Needless to say, I was so overwhelmed I just felt frozen and did nothing. Not smart.

Some of their suggestions:

  • Wear shoes during all waking hours.
  • Buy super expensive shoes/super expensive shoes didn’t help.
  • Buy inserts/inserts didn’t help.
  • Roll my feet on any variety of frozen bottles.
  • Wear braces at night/don’t wear braces at night.
  • Shots helped/shots didn’t help.

 

Things just kept getting worse and I finally decided to head to a local podiatrist. I knew I needed to do SOMETHING and I wanted an expert opinion before I wasted any money. I also wanted to see if our insurance would cover anything to help.

 

The doctor took x-rays of my feet from different views and talked with me about my symptoms. Classic case of Plantar Fasciitis. I did learn that I wasn’t “flat-footed” as I had always been told. The doctor told me that I wasn’t flat-footed, nor did I have a high arch. She said that my foot was “average”. YAY for average I guess.

 

The good news with a “average” foot was that I didn’t have to spend money on super expensive athletic shoes. She said a typical shoe with a good insert would do just fine. Awesome!

Here’s what the doctor suggested:

  1. Wearing shoes during all waking hours. Always.
  2. No more flip flops. (I knew this but still so hard to hear. HA!)
  3. No more Chucks. (Insert wailing and gnashing of teeth here.) Converse are my most  favorite shoe. But they provid zero support. How did people use to play BASKETBALL in those things!?!??!
  4. Daily stretching exercises like THESE. I can’t recommend them enough. I can definitely tell a huge difference when I consistently do these several times a day. Definitely stretch those toes back each morning before getting out of bed!
  5. Rolling my feet on frozen small juice cans (5.5 ounce) and then soaking them in hot water and epsom salt afterward.
  6. Night splints…if I felt like I needed them after doing all of the above.

 

So here’s what I purchased after her suggestions…HUGE thanks to a dear friend who gave me a gift card for my birthday specifically for new shoes!

Saucony Original Jazz Low Pro Athletic Shoes…I was basically just looking for a decent shoe with a  removable insole so that I could replace it with my new insert to help my feet. Keep in mind the doctor said my feet were pretty average so I could get away with any type shoe. If you have flat feet or a high arch, you might need to go a different route.

Skechers Reggae – Happy Rainbow…my doctor suggested a pair of Chacos sandals but I wanted to try out a lower cost option first. These do the trick! I keep them by my bed and wear them around my house every waking hour. Seriously. In the spring, I hope I can splurge on a pair of Chacos.

Skechers Performance Go Lite Walking Shoe…I’ll admit I don’t LOVE this shoe. But I needed something that I could wear to church and any other time that I did not want to wear a tennis shoe. My doctor did recommend the Skechers brand in general, but I did not find this one as supportive. I haven’t tried them yet with my inserts, but that is my next step. Next, I plan to purchase a pair of Vionic dress shoes. More expensive but definitely worth it to not have hurting feet!

Spenco Orthontic Arch Supports…very reasonably priced at less than $25 for a pair. I got mine at Academy Sports if you have one of those nearby or you can get them HERE on Amazon in a 3/4 length like I got or in a full length length HERE.

Vive Arch Support Brace…These came highly recommended by a friend but I haven’t given them a good test run because all of the other things I’ve been doing have been helping so much. I still have them on stand by though.

Comfort Dorsal Night Splints by Mars Wellness…I felt like even though I was making great progress with the other things I was doing, these were needed.

Click HERE for the ones I chose. My doctor said to be sure to choose some that had the bar/strap on the front for adjusting there as well. I really like these and they are actually comfy to sleep in or the wear when lounging around and watching television. They are not made to walk in or wear inside a shoe, but they do just fine for a quick night run to the restroom in the middle of the night. Be sure not to close the heel or toe straps too tightly because they can cause discomfort in the middle of the night. I did that the first night but after reading reviews on Amazon, I loosened them up for the next night and they have been fine! I wear a size 10 shoe and went with the small/medium and they are perfect.

And I can’t forget this! Cool Azul Pain Cream is a must have. It’s great for minor muscle and joint aches, arthritis, strains, bruises, and sprains.

It’s plant-based and contains Wintergreen and the Cool Azul essential oil blend…helps alleviate pain deep in muscles and joints and provides a cooling affect too. I rub it directly on my plantar fascia. If you want more info, just fill out this quick contact form below and I’ll be in touch!

Worth the wait…

Sometimes you wait your ENTIRE life for a movie….and it does not disappoint. I seriously could feel my spirit smiling throughout. It was so fabulous. Truly. Go take your babies. Trust me.

 

Only one small cameo (that she turned down) would have been the icing on Cherry Tree Lane. We missed you Julie Andrews…

 

But the very BEST part happens on the way home. You see a car pulled over by police officers. A conversation begins about choices, drunk driving, the recent loss of a police officer with a young family on Christmas Eve….all because of choices.

Then the conversation turns to our witness, stumbling blocks, peer pressure and temptation.

Then it turns to WHO tempts us.

Friends, God never tempts us. Only Satan. God tests us.

And Scripture tells us that anytime we are tempted, God provides a way out. Always. If we believe Scripture to be true, then we must claim this as truth as well.

Feeling tempted? Look around. Look for the way out. God has provided one. Always.

 

“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” 1 Corinthians 10:13

 

So, while I started the early part of the evening thankful for the gift of movie gift cards, I ended it thankful for conversations that happen in the dark quiet of the ride home.
